Hon. Bulodisiye Ndiwari, Mayor of Yenagoa City, In response to the severe flooding that has inundated Yenagoa and left entire communities like Biseni, Tombia, and Akenfa struggling to maintain basic needs, has stepped up his efforts to support residents with much-needed relief.
Known for his unwavering dedication to the welfare of his people, briefed the press on the dire situation, noting that floodwaters have completely submerged key areas, making roads impassable and cutting off vital access routes.
The Mayor highlighted the urgency of the situation, sharing how essential the aid was to those stranded in submerged communities.
Accompanied by Vice Hon. Mrs. Enize Josephine Omavie, Secretary Mr. Tarila Debewari, and senior Council officials, Hon. Ndiwari launched an extensive distribution of palliatives on October 25, 2024, reaching the hardest-hit areas. Their convoy arrived loaded with critical supplies, which included staple food items like rice, beans, and cooking essentials, as well as clean drinking water and sanitation supplies such as salt, cooking seasonings, and palm oil. Given the health risks posed by stagnant floodwaters, anti-malaria medications and treated mosquito nets were also distributed to mitigate the spread of malaria and other vector-borne diseases.
Hon. Ndiwari in his address expressed gratitude for their resilience and solidarity during such difficult times, assuring them that his administration would continue to prioritize their well-being. He reminded the crowd that his mission to deliver "Prosperity for All" goes beyond words, demonstrated by his tangible efforts to aid those most affected. “We are committed to standing by you,” Hon. Ndiwari emphasized, “and we are working tirelessly to ensure that no one is left behind.”
Hon. Ndiwari also took the opportunity to rally further support from the Bayelsa State Government, NEMA, NGOs, and humanitarian organizations, calling for a coordinated effort to bring enduring solutions to the yearly flooding. His appeal underscored the need for comprehensive flood management systems that address the root causes of these recurring disasters.
In an additional gesture of care, Hon. Ndiwari instructed that all anti-malaria medications provided should be distributed freely to every individual in need, recognizing the increased health risks associated with stagnant floodwaters and the proliferation of malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
As the relief distribution concluded, community leaders, including HRH Chief Obadiah John Osom of Akenfa, HRH Chief Ahoada Silikeye of Biseni Clan, and Comr. Exodus Ebidiseibofa, CDC Chairman of Tombia, accepted the palliatives on behalf of their people. They were joined by representatives of women, children, and the elderly, who offered heartfelt expressions of gratitude to Hon. Ndiwari and his team. Many residents described the intervention as a "God-sent" relief, deeply appreciative of the Mayor's attentiveness and quick response to their needs. Cheers of thanks resounded as community members praised the Prosperity Government’s choice in appointing Hon. Ndiwari, a leader they feel genuinely champions their cause.
The recipients not only expressed gratitude but also issued a collective plea to the state and federal governments for more sustainable flood control solutions. “It is our hope that this level of attention will lead to concrete flood prevention efforts, so future generations do not have to endure this same hardship,” said a community elder from Biseni. The widespread sentiment was a call for an end to the cycle of displacement and loss that has become an annual occurrence for Yenagoa’s residents.
